Clean Tech Open is an organization working together to advance development of clean technology startups. It includes leading companies, entrepreneurs, scientists and academics, and investors.
What Does Clean Tech Open Do?
Clean Tech Open provides resources, education and support for clean tech entrepreneurs.
Activities organized by Clean Tech Open include workshops such as sustainability and mentoring, a series of Public Symposia, and a directory of resources.
It also runs the Annual Business Plan Competition.
How Does the Business Plan Competition Work?
Over 100 startup teams submit an executive summary of their business idea for clean technology. This may be entered in one of six categories:
- Renewable Energy
- Energy Efficiency
- Smart Power
- Air, Water & Waste
- Green Building
In the 2008 competition, 44 teams were named Finalists. They all take part in a series of valuable, educational business workshops. Then the Finalists are given the opportunity to pitch their business plan to a judging panel.
For each of the six categories, a winner and a runner-up is announced in November.
What do they win?
Winners receive a “Startup-in-a-Box” package worth $100,000 in cash and services.
Packages are donated by high-profile clean tech partners and include $50,000 cash, office space, legal services, accounting, insurance, public relations, recruiting, software, and other business essentials. In two years, the Clean Tech Open awards over $1.2 million worth of prizes.
Category sponsors for the 2008 Competition included AMD, Google, Lexus, PG&E, SDG&E, SCE, Siemens TTB, Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, Oak Ridge National Laboratory, Argonne National Laboratory, National Renewable Energy Laboratory and Pacific Northwest National Laboratory.
In-Kind services were provided by: Accretive Solutions, Adaptive Planning, MacCorkle Insurance Service, Moyo Group Inc., Page One Public Relations, People Connect, Plug & Play Tech Center, Positive Impact Partner, San Jose Bio Center and Wilson, Sonsini, Goodrich & Rosati.
